Yin Yoga at Yoga Collective Singapore

I’ve been killing myself the past few days in terms of functional training, so I thought it would be a good idea to go to a relaxed yoga class to stretch out my tight muscles. Yin Yoga is different from the kind of yoga that most of us are familiar with because it focuses on female energy, slow-paced and meant to be done in a cool environment. Usually, one holds an asana or pose for 45 seconds to around 2 minutes for beginners and up to 5 minutes for those who are more experienced. The modern practice of Yin Yoga is attributed to Taoist yoga teacher and martial arts expert Paulie Zink less than 50 years ago.

It took me a while to find a good Yin Yoga class in Singapore, particularly because people generally prefer the more intense and popular Bikram or Hot Yoga classes. Thanks to Guavapass though, I was able to find a studio at the East Coast area that offered it.

The Studio

The Yoga Collective is known to be Singapore first home concept yoga studio. They have two branches, one in Haji Lane and the other at the East Coast. The place was a bit difficult to find as you have to pass through a steakhouse kitchen area in order to find the stairs to the loft.

Here’s a tidbit from their website’s about page:

With traditional yoga philosophy as our bedrock, The Yoga Co. offers a range of classes that incorporates other forms of exercise, such as Calisthenics and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) to build strength, flexibility and stamina while promoting thorough muscular conditioning and full body reformation. If you are looking to achieve a stronger mind and body, our carefully curated programs are just right for you.

The studio itself is made of white walls, draped ceilings and natural light. They provided everything from the mats, ropes and blocks.

The Class

The class was good for me for two reasons: First, it felt like a one-on-one session due to the small group. This is probably due to the fact that I took a class at around 2pm, which is an off peak hour due to it being during school and work hours. Second, that the instructor paid special attention to our individual limits and was nice enough to explain what muscle groups each asana targeted and how we can improve our form.

With my Yoga Collective Instructor Indra

It was quite a relaxing class that helped me clear both my head and my tense muscles. I’m looking forward to taking another Yin class to help balance my more intense classes.

Pricing

If you don’t use Guava pass like me, you can purchase their student pass at SGD 33 for 5 classes used within 2 months, SGD 199 for 10 classes used within 3 months, SGD 500 for 30 classes in 9 months. They also have a trial class for only SGD 10!
