The Blue Man Group

The Blue Man Group is a stage performance group formed in 1991 that notably uses the blue skinhead alien-like Blue Men persona when performing on stage. While they perform in several cities worldwide, the intimate Astor Place Theatre along Lafayette St in East Village has been their home for more than 2 decades already.

Thankfully, they have student rush tickets, which are tickets sold at a lower price for students an hour before a show. My friend and I held out our student IDs and got around 25% off. We only paid $40 instead of the usual $54 for their cheapest balcony tickets.

Because the theatre is pretty small, we still felt like we had a good view. It was one of the funnest and most interactive shows I’ve ever watched! They would call audience members to perform with them on the stage, and many of their executions were done with the crowd’s participation. At first, we were very disappointed because we weren’t part of the “splash zone” but we quickly realized that we’d still be part of the action even if we were way in the back!

In our search for interesting Off Broadway Shows (we also watched Drunk Shakespeare a few days after), we were intrigued by the Blue Man Group’s concept. It was an improv, light, music and comedy show all rolled into one. It was funny, exciting and definitely worth our money. I would definitely, definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a different theatre experience. It’s great show for everyone, educational and safe for children, witty enough for teenagers and generally entertaining enough for the older crowd.

The intimate space made it easier to get photos with the performers after. It was a delight that they never broke out of character and made the time to accommodate our requests for photos.

The Blue Man Group performs in several cities worldwide and have varying rates per location. If you’re interested to know more about them or find a performance near you, click here.
