FlyCycle at FlyProject Kuala Lumpur

I have to say that the experience of going to spinning classes across countries feel somewhat like going to church – everyone sort of looks like someone you know, the music is very similar and there’s a sense of deja vu when you enter. In this age of cultural melting pots, every big city feels like a slightly altered version of the other and somehow, you always feel at home.

Ever since I started using ClassPass, I’ve been finding a lot of joy trying out different boutique fitness studios in Manila and I couldn’t wait to see what the app could offer in across Asia.

Given it was the holiday season when I went to Kuala Lumpur, most of the fitness studios had limited schedules but I was lucky to enough to be able to book FlyProject’s signature FlyRide class!

What is FlyProject?

Since opening in 2016, FlyProject now has six branches across Kuala Lumpur and are known to be the biggest boutique fitness centre offering indoor spin, rhythmic boxing, yoga, pilates, circuit training and climb classes.

At FLYPROJECT, we offer motivating, action-pack and dynamic full-body workouts combined with incredible high-energy music, cutting-edge sound and lighting systems, guided by inspirational instructors.

While there is no direct equivalent in the Philippines owned by one group, the 8 Forbestown building in BGC houses similar boutique experiences such as Electric Studio (Indoor Cycling), Flyweight Boxing Studio and BARE Manila (HIIT).

How is FlyRide and FlyRhythm Different?

FlyRide is a full body workout with more challenging combos and moves, meant to be a step up from the FlyBeginner Class.

FlyRythm is an intense full body workout that improves coordination, stamina and movement (think more dancelike)! If I were available during the FlyRhythm class, I would have actually preferred that one, but due to schedule constraints, I took the FlyRide class instead.

My FlyRide Experience at FlyProject KL

I went to their Intermark Mall branch located on the third floor. It wasn’t that difficult to find and I was surprised at the size of the space as it didn’t look so big from the outside. In terms of the location, it reminded me a lot of Manila’s Ride Revolution with its bright interiors and service quality.

Shoes and towels are included in the ClassPass price and they have the Botanist for their complimentary shampoo and conditioner.

One of the more memorable parts of their interior are the lockers with names of famous singers and locks that top my list of boutique fitness locker locks that I can’t seem to lock on my own. Thankfully, their staff came to help!

The spinning studio itself was dimly lit with dynamic lighting that changes during the ride. For some of the sprints, there was even a moment when the lights zoomed pass us and felt like those in a racing game. It’s actually the first indoor cycling studio that I’ve tried that has this.

While I definitely found that entertaining, it can induce epilepsy and I somewhat worried for them for a second when I realised that they didn’t have a waiver.

The class was half full with Coach Ivan leading the pack and his teaching style was engaging with his stamina up throughout the whole class. I think he carried the group quite well. While I feel like the class really was catered to more beginners because of the moves, I did enjoy the playlist and still got a great sweat out of it!

He was one of the first coaches I’ve actually met that sat down with this students after the class to outright ask for feedback on how to improve. He was even kind enough to take a few photos of me on the site after he caught me taking an awkward selfie.

I definitely enjoyed my time in their studio. I would love to go back and try out the other workouts on their portfolio!
