Down To Earth at Hustle House Jakarta

If it isn’t already obvious from my history of fitness experiences, I don’t always do functional training classes. At this point in my fitness journey, I still find them a little overwhelming and intimidating. But after seeing the great reviews of Hustle House Jakarta on ClassPass, I just had to be brave and book a class.

What is Hustle House and Down to Earth?

Hustle House is a functional training boutique fitness studio that that has 7 different workouts that is cycled throughout the week. Its programs are designed in a way that different muscles are targeted for the different workouts, allowing for proper rest and recovery during other days. The other great thing about their workouts is that there are many ways to adjust them to scale depending on your individual fitness level.

According to their website, here are the workouts currently on their roster:

MACHINE GUN – An entire class dedicated to the muscles that outline your profile and define our presence. In human movement, you reach to pull an object towards you, using upper body muscles such as the mid/upper-back and biceps; pull things up to your standard using strong glutes and lower back.

UNITED WE SWEAT – This class focuses on total-body strength and conditioning in a circuit fashion. Stations dedicated to upper body, lower body, cardio and core are designed to stimulate every muscle in your body. Start your day with a (not so) little sweat!

KISS MY ABS – A class that everyone needs to get those all-important strong core muscles. A strong core is a good (and necessary) foundation for all other workouts that you will ever do. And who doesn’t want nice looking abs! Nuff said!

SHOCK AND SHRED – A full body cardiovascular workout with an emphasis on flushing the lower extremities. This class is designed to increase your heart rate, utilizing a combination of high-intensity interval training with lower intensity endurance. Emphasizing full body athletic conditioning, you’ll test your speed, agility, strength, and power through a combination of explosive drills that spike your heart rate and competitive edge.

AWAKEN THE FORCE – An entire class dedicated to the upper body muscles that generate a push, such as the chest, triceps, and shoulders. We slow the pace down and isolate each muscle group so that when they work together, they generate a greater force. May the force be with you!

ASS ARMS ABS – This 60-minute class, knowns as the Triple A, is where we leave the cardio behind, focus on gaining strength and sculpting of the ass, arms, and abs. Form, tempo, and technique will be at the centre of this class. And bringing into play T.U.T (time under tension), spending more time on eccentrics, and isometric holds will guarantee you’ll leave with maximum burn.

DOWN TO EARTH – In any pursuit, you must start from the ground up. We focus on the muscles of your lower half which keep you powerful and rooted through the earth. Honor your legs with a complete routine dedicated specifically to your quads, hamstrings, glutes and calves!

The format is very similar to F45, another popular HIIT fitness studio, but different because of the style of the studio. While F45’s studio are often bright and have television sets showing the moves in front of the different stations, Hustle House’s studio gives a more underground, neon-lit mood.

What are the Hustle House facilities?

Hustle House is comprised of three floors – a studio, a cafe “Fuel Bar” and a Normatec sponsored “Recovery Room”. Inclusive with your class rates are free valet services, free Normatec sessions before/after class and a free inbody scan and analysis.

Their studio is located on the ground floor and used for their classes seven times a day.  On the second floor, Fuel Bar serves pre- and post-workout drinks and meals, plus a water dispenser that you can use to refill your water bottle. On the third floor, the Recovery Room where you can use the elite muscle compression technology. They also offer sports massages!

They have lockers available inside the co-ed bathroom adjacent to the studio, but they weren’t very strict about having the bags inside. They also have additional shower areas and toilets on the second floor.

My Down to Earth Experience

I came in 5 minutes late because I miscalculated how long I needed to wade through Jakarta traffic, but I was lucky enough to still be able to catch the class before they started. I had to sign a waiver at the front desk before being given a large towel.

The class starts with the main instructor splitting the class into different groups. Then, they explain the different stations and demonstrate the moves for each station. There were four stations for the Down To Earth workout of the day. For the different stations, we used  equipment such as  kettle bells, dumb bells, and resistance bands plus did body weight exercises such as squats, side sweeps, lunges and burpees. While I usually workout on an empty stomach, I certainly regret not being ready for such an intense class.

The instructors were very attentive and were adjusting individual intensity by increasing or decreasing the weights, or giving alternative ways to do the same movement. While there was a definite language barrier because I wasn’t able to tell them I didn’t speak Bahasa, they would make sure to demonstrate every time they noticed my form was not correct. I really appreciated this because many of the movement combinations were new to me and I needed to constantly observe other people how they did them.

The class wasn’t the easiest to follow but with the red lights, great playlist and energy from the instructors, time really flew for me. It was an enjoyable suffering for sure and definitely a class worth taking for people who want a real push.

Bonus: After Workout Drinks

After showering, my legs were already starting to feel sore. So when I found out they had a cafe that sold post-workout drinks, I head up there and grabbed an “Love U So Matcha” for IDR 75,000k (~$5.40 / Php276) before heading up. It was delicious!

Would I go again?

Definitely! The facilities were great, the staff were very friendly, the instructors were very attentive. The lower half of my body was aching for a whole 3 days afterwards and I loved it. The workout was quick, effective and fun. I totally recommend it to people who want to go hard and get good value for their time.

I think doing this class every week will give my the booty of my dreams. If only they had a branch in Manila!

My only regret is that I didn’t have the time to try more of their Fuel Bar’s food and the Normatec compression tech. But I’m looking forward to coming again!
