Archery 101

A fun fact about me is that I used to be a varsity pistol shooter for the Ateneo Rifle Pistol Team. Unfortunately, shooting was one of the things I choose to give up in university as I ended up freelancing as a designer, heading a non-profit consulting organization and working for the WYA. Still, I’ve somewhat retained my steady hands, strong arms, and an affinity for sharp shots. While I’ve already sold my air pistol, I’ve found there are other ways to relive the joy of hitting the bulls eye in a safe environment — one of them is archery. Indoor archery is a joy for those like me who absolutely detest the heat (unless it’s at the beach). In the past few years, there have been several indoor archery studios popping up all over Manila. For today, I’ll be writing about my experience with one of the newest ones: Archery 101.

Archery 101 is located at 4/F A&A Building No. 37 Scout Borromeo St., Quezon City, Metro Manila. According to their Facebook, they’re open from 12pm to 8pm everyday. They offer a full range services beyond archery lessons, bow customizations, private events and team building activities.

When we walked in, there was instructor teaching a 5 year old little girl! It’s a pretty family friendly place and they really help beginners in terms of teaching you the basics of adjusting your sight, finding the right stance, holding the bow and releasing. I knew the instructor was quite sharp because while I stared with the same equal stance, he adjusted my right foot forward by half a foot and it instantly made a difference. I’ve always had a need for stance adjustment and even when I was shooting before, I had to adjust as well.

The air conditioner was cold, the staff were pleasant, the equipment looked well-cared for and they had fun music playing. It was also the first archery range I’ve been to that had (fake) animal targets. You can’t imagine how fun (but still humane) it was to aim for a wild boar instead of just a target sheet!

Among local indoor archery spaces, it’s the most expensive one so far. Thankfully, it’s part of my Guava Pass so I didn’t have to pay for regular walk-in class fees at Php600 per hour. If you’re interested in using Guava Pass which is available in several cities across Asia, click here for my promo code to get discount on your subscription.
