麻辣英雄 Spicy Hotpot

When I said I had been craving spicy Sichuan hotpot, I think the universe took it quite literally. Just days after my experience at Sutiwa, I was invited to another hotpot place literally called “Spicy Hotpot” by one of my aunts and her family who lived in the area.

The interior was beautiful with the imitation  roofs, lanterns and flowers. The sounds of people speaking Chinese in both Mandarin and Cantonese was a good sign right away. I was initially worried because I had our cat with me, but their manage was nice enough to let us keep her with us during the dinner as long as she doesn’t leave her carrier.

Like most hotpot places, we were given a menu to choose from. I was half expecting it to be black and white with check boxes next to it, but to my surprise they even had colored photos. I know it’s such a small thing but I often have to guess what dishes look like in a lot of places.

With a twist, they also had a tablet where almost everything had photos and they computed the cost upfront for you. I appreciate this because we sometimes get carried away with ordering and end up being surprised at the end for other restaurants.

Their manager was kind enough to mix the sauces for us. I often like to make my own sauces when I go to hotpot but lately I’ve been feeling adventurous and these tasted great. Each one costs Php 58.00.

Now, to the sauce! We got the clear collagen and the spicy Sichuan. While it had the strong, pepper corn taste that I love, I found the spicy Sichuan was a bit saltier than I was used to. They advised us to mix the two to balance the tastes and with a bit of the clear broth it did taste better!

My favourite dish was the Lobster ball. I’ve had over a dozen hotpots by now but it’s the first time that I had one with this. Flavor was really good  and the presentation was both fun to look at it and pick from.

Overall, it was a fun experience. The ambience of the store, with soft Chinese music, cool air conditioning and delicious food was great for conversation. Definitely one of the most comfortable, family-friendly hot places that I’ve been to!

They are open daily from 11:30am to 4am (perfect after that night time drinking session)!
